I bought this ground beef and the inside is completely grey — did the store scam me?

Have you ever bought ground beef that looks bright red on the outside but grey inside? It may look suspicious, but in most cases it doesn’t mean the meat is spoiled.

This happens because of oxygen exposure. The outside of the meat reacts with oxygen and turns bright red, while the inside gets less oxygen and can appear grey or brown. This is a normal chemical reaction and not necessarily a sign that the meat is bad.

The real signs of spoiled beef are a sour smell, slimy texture, or damaged packaging. If the meat smells normal and feels firm, it is usually still safe to cook.

Raw ground beef should generally be used within 1–2 days in the refrigerator, or frozen if you plan to keep it longer.

So if your ground beef is grey inside, don’t panic right away — it’s often a natural process, not a scam.
