I found this at the bottom of an old toolbox in a garage, covered in dust and clearly forgotten for years. At first, I thought it was just a random piece of metal… but when I cleaned it, something caught my attention 👀
Small engraved numbers started to appear, and especially these little wheels that rotate to change the numbers. Intriguing, right?
At first, I thought it might be a broken part from an old device, or maybe a tool missing some pieces. But after a bit of research, the answer became clear 👇
👉 It’s actually a plate from an old mechanical numbering machine.
These tools were widely used in workshops, factories, and offices to stamp serial numbers onto different materials: metal, wood, paper, or labels. You would set the numbers using the small wheels, then press the tool to leave a clear and repeatable imprint.
Before the digital era, mechanisms like this were essential for organizing, identifying, and tracking parts or documents. Simple, durable, and surprisingly clever for its time 🔧
Today it’s just a small forgotten object… but it tells a real story about manual work and old-school engineering.
💬 Have you ever seen something like this before? Or would you have guessed what it was for?
